Providing both functionalist and phenomenological explanations, Bynum explores the ways in which food practices enabled women to exert control within the family and to define their religious vocations. They also offered themselves as food in miracles of feeding and bodily manipulation. Women renounced ordinary food through fasting in order to prepare for receiving extraordinary food in the eucharist. She argues that food lies at the heart of much of women's piety. Using materials based on saints' lives and the religious and mystical writings of medieval women and men, Caroline Walker Bynum uncovers the pattern lying behind these aspects of women's religiosity and behind the fascination men and women felt for such miracles and devotional practices. Previous scholars have occasionally noted the various phenomena in isolation from each other and have sometimes applied modern medical or psychological theories to them. It also forms a chapter in the history of women. The occurrence of such phenomena sheds much light on the nature of medieval society and medieval religion. In the period between 12 in western Europe, a number of religious women gained widespread veneration and even canonization as saints for their extraordinary devotion to the Christian eucharist, supernatural multiplications of food and drink, and miracles of bodily manipulation, including stigmata and inedia (living without eating).

The historical absence of these communities in fiction has motivated choices in Klune's character development. Klune has been open about his lived experiences with asexuality, queerness and neurodiversity, and how they influence his writing. Klune's writing influences include Stephen King, Wilson Rawls, Patricia Nell Warren, Robert McCammon, and Terry Pratchett. His young work in poetry and short stories were the first to be published. He was eight years old when he first began to write fiction. His novel Into This River I Drown won the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay Romance in 2014. Klune has spoken about how his asexuality influences his writing. His fantasy novel The House in the Cerulean Sea is a New York Times best seller and winner of the 2021 Alex and Mythopoeic Awards. Travis John Klune (born May 20, 1982) is an American author of fantasy and romantic fiction featuring gay and LGBTQ+ characters. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Courting Samira by Amal AwadThe story is a typical chick-lit plot in many ways: a girl in her late twenties meets a boy, etc., but the twist is that this girl, Samira, meets boy after boy after boy (“doorknockers”) as they visit her home as potential suitors in a culture that views marriage as a relationship between two families, rather than solely between the individuals who, if the match is successful, will spend the rest of their lives together. I enjoyed the novel, after I had gotten used to the author’s informal writing style that uses periods (and thus creates sentence fragments) where I am more accustomed to seeing commas, semi-colons, or em dashes (several authors I’ve read recently seem to do this). I thought those reasons were as good as any to purchase the book. It caught my eye immediately, as I share my first name with the author and one of my daughters shares her first name with the protagonist. I purchased this book on a whim because it was a semi-finalist in the General Fiction category for Amazon’s Breakthrough Novel Award. Amal Awad’s debut novel, Courting Samira, centers on a Jane Austen-style love-triangle set in a contemporary Arab-Australian community where business-like arranged marriages are still the norm. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Mine katy evans free read onlineScorpion has thrown out a couple of kicks, and they’re back at center. “Brooke,” Nora sniffles, “they’re going to kill each other!”Ī burning ball of fear gathers in my throat as we both watch the fight in mounting dread. Scorpion struggles and rams a knee into Remy’s gut. My stomach knots as the fight gets even more vicious and Remy corners Scorpion on the pole and slams his head from side to side, attacking him like he would his speed ball. “AAAAAA!” the public gasps as Scorpion’s elbow breaks and his arm dangles limply from the middle down. His lips move as he mumbles something into Scorpion’s ear, and right when Scorpion lets out a sneering laugh, a loud crack fills the arena. Panting for breath but unstoppable, Remington grabs him by the neck and jerks him around to face the empty space where Nora’s chair sits empty. Scorpion’s nearly black blood is splattered across the canvas floor, and although he’s stumbling, he refuses to fall. “Just hold my hand while I watch my guy take this.”Īs if he’s listening to me, Remington continues terminating Scorpion up there. Sucking in a breath and leaning over to her so Pete doesn’t hear, I nod. I focus all my attention on my sister when another contraction takes hold, and Nora slowly slides her hand over my stomach. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Miss peregrine library of soulsAfter repelling a nearby hollowgast, Jacob escapes the phone booth along with Emma and Addison. Moreover, Jacob can exert a limited amount of control on a hollowgast, an invaluable advantage in the fight to come. Jacob has just discovered a new manifestation of his second soul: he can see the otherwise invisible "hollowgasts," antagonistic, tentacle-mouthed ghosts who feed on the souls of peculiars with the aim of restoring their human form. At the end of the previous book, Hollow City, Jacob and Emma, along with their talking dog companion, Addison, escape from a "time loop" into a phone booth located in the present day. The protagonists of the series are two teenaged "peculiars," Jacob Magellan Portman and Emma Bloom. A fantasy novel for young adults, American author Ransom Riggs’s Library of Souls (2015) is the third book in a tetralogy that includes Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2011), Hollow City (2014), and Map of Days (2018), all of which focus on a group of "peculiar" children and young adults who possess a "second soul" that manifests transformative, supernatural properties. 5/24/2023 0 Comments William h armstrong booksThe family subsists on fried corn mush, biscuits, and milk gravy until one morning they wake up to the smell of boiling ham. The father and his dog, Sounder, go hunting each night, but the hunting is inadequate. The black sharecropper's family is poor and hungry. Sounder won the Newbery Award in 1970 and was made into a major motion picture in 1972. The boy hears his father may be in Bartow and later Gilmer counties, but the author does not specify where the boy lives. The author notes prisoners were hauled in "mule-drawn wagons", and the mention of chain gangs places an upper limit to the story of 1955 when the practice ended. The author refers to the various characters by their relationship or their role in the story. Sounder, the dog's name, is the only character name used in the book. Although the family's difficulties increase when the father is imprisoned for stealing a ham from work, the boy still hungers for an education. It is the story of an African-American boy living with his sharecropper family. Sounder is a young adult novel by William H. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Sue grafton alphabet series xA former cop, Kinsey struggles to make a living as a PI, while trying to work through her abandonment issues. Kinsey was born, raised and still lives in a fictional California town called Santa Teresa a ubiquitous location somewhat reminiscent of Santa Barbara. I hope Grafton doesn’t make the end of the alphabet the end of the line for Kinsey as well. What Grafton plans to do with her quirky private detective character after the last two letters have been claimed by their respective murder victims is uncertain. The last book in the series to hit book store and virtual shelves in 2015 was simply titled “X”. Since 1982, Kinsey has been solving murders alphabetically with titles like “A is for Alibi”, “B is for Burglar”, and so on. One of these is Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Series. This keeps us from getting into long discussions on what to read next. Lately, though, we’ve taken to reading mystery and thriller collections in chronological order. With the exception of romance novels, we’ve covered most genres. From books that made us think to stories that gave us chills. The Jibo story was a sharp example of life imitating art, and a reminder of why Chiang, who until recently was a technical writer for Microsoft, is revered in the sci-fi community as one of the most exciting thinkers of his generation. When sales stall, Blue Gamma plans to shut down their servers, leaving digient owners distraught. ‘The Lifecycle of Software Objects’ – the novella-length centrepiece of a new short story collection, Exhalation, his first since his 2002 debut, Stories of Your Life and Others – details the efforts of a fictional company, Blue Gamma, to maintain socially conscious virtual ‘digients’, which owners ‘raise’ for up to 20 years. The story was about how Jibo, a manufacturer of artificially intelligent ‘companion’ robots for the home, was now shutting down its servers, causing distress to Jibo owners who had come to think of their little robots as part of the family. In March, Ted Chiang, whose 1998 science fiction novella, Story of Your Life, about alien communication became the basis of the Oscar-nominated film Arrival, was sitting at his computer at home in Seattle, when he came across a news story that surprised him. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Interference by kay honeymanRules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian's permission to enter.
